To get to know it, you have to arrive and get lost in the valleys, breathe the fresh air of the mountains and the river, let the green landscape invade your senses. This is Penacova, a land of rivers and streams, viewpoints and cliffs, mills and watermills, wind and water.

BRight in the center of the village of Penacova, next to the Town Hall building, the Pérgola Raúl Lino celebrates in 2018, one hundred years since its inauguration. The Pergola, designed by Raúl Lino, a profound admirer of the landscape of Penacova, was offered in 1918 by the Sociedade de Propaganda de Portugal to the people of Penacova. This pleasant balcony covered with old wisteria allows you to see the river, downstream, to the curve of Rebordosa, and contemplate one of the most iconic landscapes in the municipality. Penacova intends, throughout 2018, to develop a versatile and differentiated cultural program taking place precisely in that space, combining the ludic and pedagogical aspects, highlighting in particular the figure of Raúl Lino.

Mirante Emydgio da Silva

Built at the beginning of the century. XX, on the initiative of the politician of the same name, the Belvedere Emydgio da Silva, located next to the old Preventório is a project, by the Venetian architect Nicolau Bigaglia. Inaugurated on May 31, 1908, the Lookout resembles an oriental pagoda built on the most advanced prow of the escarpment. Vitorino Nemésio would later write that from there he seemed to be “seeing the cathedral from the pulpit” and, in fact, from there, next to what had once been the Castle and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, and under the columns of stone originating from the Monastery of Lorvão, the landscape over the Mondego, overwhelms us, it is so magnificent.

The Monastery of Santa Maria de Lorvão or simply Monastery of Lorvão is located in the parish of Lorvão, municipality of Penacova, district of Coimbra, in Portugal. It was an important monastery and center for the production of illuminated manuscripts in the 12th century, later serving as a women's monastery. After the extinction of the Religious Orders in Portugal in the 19th century, it saw new use in the 20th century as the psychiatric hospital of Lorvão, closed in 2012. The Monastery of Lorvão has been classified as a National Monument since 1910.
Standing out, on one of the altars in the choir, is the beautiful image of Our Lady of Life, from the 17th century. XIV. However, what most arouses admiration in that space is undoubtedly the grandiose chairs in black Brazilian rosewood and walnut, built between 1742 and 1747, due to the delicacy of the ornaments, the touching spirituality of the holy martyrs carved on the chairs and the fantasy note given by the existing masks in the lower part of the seats. It is the most spectacular Portuguese stall and the most masterful from a technical point of view.

The great Late Hercynian fault that runs from Orense to the Lousã basin

It is here, in Entre-Penedos, that the well-known Mondego Bookstore is located, named after the strangulation of the river and the “high settlements of siluric quartzites, very fractured (Girão, 1941), arranged almost vertically like books inclined in a bookcase. The great Late Hercynian fault of Orense-Lousã Basin is quite evident here, separating the Serra do Buçaco from its extension – the Serra da Atalhada – taking advantage of this location on the Mondego river to make its incision and define its route, in a clear adaptation to the tectonic component.

PR1 MRT — Paredes Waterfalls Pedestrian Route

The Paredes Waterfall Trail is a short linear route, about 7.1 km long (round trip). The main attraction of the pedestrian trail, as the name implies, is the Paredes Waterfalls, located at its end. The route runs along the course of the Ribeira de Moinhos, up to the village of Paredes, allowing you to discover the ruins of seven water mills and the importance that the river had, in the not too distant past, for agricultural practices and the livelihood of the local population. This testimony, of Man's relationship with the stream, is still present in the various existing dams or dams, which form small pools and waterfalls of singular beauty. After traveling 1700 m from the beginning of the route, the village of Paredes appears, where it is possible to observe the presence of shale in traditional architecture.

“The relic” of penedo c'abana and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in mondego

There are several boulders, but the one that shakes is partially supported by a granite slab and has a plaque recommending where to push with your hands. It is an individual or group exercise and the result looks the same. Add the fantastic viewpoint overlooking the Mondego river and you have a fantastic place to visit in the municipality of Tábua.
